Souvenir programme for the second "Pretty Policeman's Ball" gala benefit event held at the Piccadilly Theatre on November 10th 1985, to raise funds for London Gay Switchboard (later known as London Lesbian and Gay Switchboard, and then just Switchboard) to buy and equip premises of their own. Includes an introduction by Nina Jenkins, (Chair of Switchboard), a section by the director for the event, Philip Hedley (then director of the Theatre Royal, Stratford) and an article by Simon Callow on his visit to Switchboard. Includes adverts for many of the LGBTQ+ entertainment venues, organisations, publications and business at the time. The title was a play on the title of the series of similar fundraising events for Amnesty International held in London, beginning in 1976, called "The Secret Policeman's Ball". Performers included The Communards (Jimmy Somerville and Richard Coles), Simon Callow, Billy Connolly, Tom Robinson, Liz Smith, Bernard Padden, Simon Fanshawe, Geoffrey Burridge, Miriam Margolyes, Mark Bunyan, Elaine Loudon, Fay Presto, Paul Gambaccini, Anna Karen, Parker and Klein, Barbara Rosenblat, Mathilde Santing, Philip Sayer, Colin Sell, Maggie Steed, Ruby Wax, and Kate Williams and the Stratford East Variety Co. Adverts include those for The London Apprentice bar in Old Street, Gay's The Word bookshop, Heaven night club, Gay Times magazine, Brilliance Books, Out monthly newspaper, the London Lesbian and Gay Centre in Clerkenwell, Traffic bar in York Way, The Mix at the Scala Cinema at King's Cross, Terrence Higgins Trust, Capital Gay weekly newspaper, and City Limits magazine in Islington.
