'Getting the sex you want' - a GROUP about SEX for GAY MEN'

Paul Thurlow was a volunteer on the Islington's Pride LGBTQ+ archives project at the Islington Local History Centre and later became a volunteer with the Islington Local History Centre. He is a long-term resident of Islington and an active member of the LGBTQ+ community having volunteered with many organisations including Gay Switchboard. He also actively participated in many events and activities.

A6, black, grey and red on white, both sides, with black and white photo on front cover, folded into leaflet 10cm x 21cm. Leaflet advertising a series of facilitated group workshops run by staff of Camden & Islington Community Health Services NHS Trust at the Mortimer Market Centre (close to Tottenham Court Road) and funded by the Trust's Health Promotion Service. "It offers a space where gay men can talk together, share ideas and experiences and explore ways of changing their sex lives for the better.... We look at aspects of our lives which may be stressful or problematic, which often prevents us from getting the sex and relationships we want..." (quotes from the leaflet). The date of publication is unclear (the dialling code of the phone numbers on the leaflet dates it to the period 1990-1995, when the UK was in the worst depths of the HIV/AIDS epidemic, with LGBTQ+ men as the most severely affected part of the community; a period before effective treatments to supress the HIV virus became available. The leaflet states that these groups had been run for seven years, originally under the title 'Changing Personal Sexual Practice'.
