Paul Thurlow was a volunteer on the Islington's Pride LGBTQ+ archives project at the Islington Local History Centre and later became a volunteer with the Islington Local History Centre. He is a long-term resident of Islington and an active member of the LGBTQ+ community having volunteered with many organisations including Gay Switchboard. He also actively participated in many events and activities.

Report on speech by LGBTQ+ activist Lisa Power (former resident of Islington) at Islington Town Hall to commemorate the 30th anniversary of Section 28, the part of the Local Government Act 1988 that made it unlawful for a local authority to "intentionally promote homosexuality or publish material with the intention of promoting homosexuality", or "promote the teaching in any maintained school of the acceptability of homosexuality as a pretended family relationship". Section 28 was repealed in Scotland in 2000, and in England and Wales in 2003. Lisa Power helped to set up The Pink Paper, a nationwide LGBTQ+ newspaper during the campaign to prevent Section 20 becoming law, helped set up the LGBTQ+ campaigning organisation Stonewall, and was a long-standing volunteer at Switchboard, the LGBTQ+ helpline based in Islington.
