Paul Thurlow was a volunteer on the Islington's Pride LGBTQ+ archives project at the Islington Local History Centre and later became a volunteer with the Islington Local History Centre. He is a long-term resident of Islington and an active member of the LGBTQ+ community having volunteered with many organisations including Gay Switchboard. He also actively participated in many events and activities.

Obituary by Graham McKerrow for Michael Mason, campaigning gay journalist, a member of the London Gay Liberation Front, then reporter and later news editor of Gay News in the 1970's, involved in the establishment of both Switchboard (then London Gay Switchboard) in 1974 and Gay Sweatshop theatre company. He went on to found and edit Capital Gay newspaper in 1981.
