Scope and Content22 pages, A4, photocopied, black on white. The Future of London Government Research and Consultation Project was established by the Greater London Council (GLC) in 1985, after legislation abolishing the GLC became law. It's objective was to produce a blueprint for a new pan-London 'strategic authority' following a consultation exercise with the population of London, and unofficially to influence future Labour Party and Labour government policy. This particular consultation document was directed at lesbians and gay men and LGBTQ+ organisations. It focussed on whether such a new authority should have a legal duty to promote equal opportunities for lesbians and gay men, a duty to consult with the lesbian and gay community in formulating its policies, and whether it should have power to require organisations to adopt equal opportunities policies through its grant-giving, and contract terms with suppliers, etc. The document includes an overview of the position of lesbians and gay men in London at the time (including discriminatory laws), the work the GLC had undertaken so far (including that of it's Women's Committee and Unit and Ethnic Minority Unit), and funding given to lesbian and gay organisations. It was written by Paul Thurlow, who worked in the Future of London Government Research and Consultation Project, in the GLC's Majority Party Office from late 1985 to 31st March 1986.
