Paul Thurlow was a volunteer on the Islington's Pride LGBTQ+ archives project at the Islington Local History Centre and later became a volunteer with the Islington Local History Centre. He is a long-term resident of Islington and an active member of the LGBTQ+ community having volunteered with many organisations including Gay Switchboard. He also actively participated in many events and activities.

This handout was prepared as a handout for the first in-service training session for volunteers at London Gay Switchboard (later 'Lesbian & Gay Switchboard', and then just 'Switchboard') on race and racism. Includes a rationale for why racism is an issue for Gay Switchboard, examples of racism within the lesbian and gay scene/communities, points to bear in mind when taking calls, and information on the content of the Ethnic Minorities File used by Gay Switchboard volunteers when answering calls.
