'Race and Racism' London Gay Switchboard Training notes

Paul Thurlow was a volunteer on the Islington's Pride LGBTQ+ archives project at the Islington Local History Centre and later became a volunteer with the Islington Local History Centre. He is a long-term resident of Islington and an active member of the LGBTQ+ community having volunteered with many organisations including Gay Switchboard. He also actively participated in many events and activities.

14 A4 sheets, one side only; photocopy; some pages typed, some hand-written, with pencil notes added. This was prepared as the script and notes to deliver the first in-service training session for volunteers at London Gay Switchboard (later 'Lesbian & Gay Switchboard', and then just 'Switchboard') on race and racism. Includes sections on what racism is, roots of racism, attitudes and institutionalised racism, the reality of racism in Britain, racism on the lesbian and gay scene, in what ways is Switchboard a racist institution, ideas for discussion in small groups, some case studies, and a suggested reading list. Item contains examples of derogatory situations and language.
