Paul Thurlow was a volunteer on the Islington's Pride LGBTQ+ archives project at the Islington Local History Centre and later became a volunteer with the Islington Local History Centre. He is a long-term resident of Islington and an active member of the LGBTQ+ community having volunteered with many organisations including Gay Switchboard. He also actively participated in many events and activities.

Photocopied A4 sheet, black on white. Copy of an open letter from the Gay Black Group to other LGBTQ+ organisations. The letter seeks "..support and commitment in combatting the growing presence of fascism and racism in the gay community. We are becoming increasingly aware of people wearing fascist and Nazi insignia at various lesbian/gay venues, proudly displaying the regalia of the British Movement and the National Front... The Gay Black Group has experienced violence at the hands of fascists both due to racism and because of our sexuality. Please join us in coordination the fight to stamp out these evils... We are open to any suggestions." At that time, the Gay Black Group met at Gay's the Word bookshop in Marchmont Street, Bloomsbury.
