  • Scope and Content
Exterior of Friends' House (Deaconess Home) with National House at the right. This extension to the Conference Hall was built in 1871 to accommodate around 50 deaconesses, part nurse, part social worker tending the sick and poor at home and abroad, recognizable by their distinctive uniform of plain dress with white cap, cuffs, collars and aprons. The ladies paid £50 per year (if they could) for their own room (or cubicle) and use of a spacious drawing room and large devotional room.
