Set design sketches/paintings and maquettes by Frederick Crooke for Rigoletto played at the New Theatre, London from 1942. Designs for various ballets outlined in pencil and painted in watercolour. Notated with comments about the characters' costumes.Seven designs for the backdrops and set designs, painted on grid paper. One design of 'RIGOLETTO Act II Groundrow scale 1/2"/1' ' of a stair and broken pillar. One design of 'RIGOLETTO Inn Sign scale 1"/1' of two horse heads with the banner 'Albergo' underneath them. One design of 'RIGOLETTO Act II P.S. No 2 wing scale 1/2"/1' of trees. One design of 'RIGOLETTO No 1 P.S. wing scale 1/2"/1' of trees and a stone wall. One design of 'RIGOLETTO Act II No 1 O.P. wing scale 1/2"/1' of a building facade with balcony. One design of 'RIGOLETTO Coat of Arms Mantua on drape to back throne scale 1"/1'. One (outsized) large design of 'RIGOLETTO' backdrop with detailed painting of coat of arms and roundels drawn all over the background.Designs for the set - seven pillars painted on card and supported by wooden tabs to allow them to stand. One tree with wooden support to allow to stand. Three curtains and skirtings painted on card.
