WREATHS were laid at war memorials on Remembrance Sunday and Armistice Day this week.
To comply with social distancing guidelines there were small ceremonies held on Sunday and Wednesday in Islington Green, off Upper Street, Manor Gardens in Holloway and Spa Green, Clerkenwell.
Islington South MP Emily Thornberry joined the borough’s mayor Councillor Janet Burgess on Sunday for two minutes’ silence and a wreath-laying ceremony, while Islington North MP Jeremy Corbyn joined veterans in Manor Gardens.
On Wednesday, marking 102 years since the end of the First World War, pupils from the Gower School Montessori Primary in Cynthia Street, Angel, also laid a wreath in Islington Green.
Headteacher Emma Gower said: “They were so well behaved and respectful, I was really proud of them. Passers-by commented on how touching it was to see children paying their respects.”
The Tribune has previously reported on the memories of Islington’s surviving veterans of the Second World War, including Ken Watts, who landed on Golden Beach on D-Day.
