Abstract

Seven primary schools this week introduced a ban on traffic from roads in front of their gates during rush hours.

Ambler, Ashmount, Drayton Park, Yerbury, Duncombe, Rotherfield and St Mark’s C of E Primary have launched the initiative, which residents were consulted on last year.

Jono Kenyon, from Ambler Primary School’s environmental group Grow Ambler, helped campaign for school streets.
He said: “It is a proven way of creating safe streets outside schools.

“We would like Islington to be more ambitious with this scheme and roll it out across the borough.”

Ambler Road will be closed between 8.30am and 9.15am and 3.15pm and 4pm in term time.

Residents and people who work on school streets will be given exemptions. Non-registered vehicles may be issued with a fine if caught on camera.

Vehicles with exemptions can access the road without receiving a £135 fine or £65 if paid in two weeks

Ambler Primary headteacher Juliet Benis said: “Children here have a route they can use to come to school without traffic being a problem. It is a way of having less pollution and safe streets.”
