A poignant memorial to the thousands of Islington residents who gave their lives during the First World War will be officially unveiled this Remembrance Sunday.

The “Tommy” statue will stand in Islington Memorial Green, forming part of the There But Not There project by the charity Remembered.

It is a nationwide campaign by the charity which aims to educate generations about the war and raise funds to help those suffering from hidden wounds of post-traumatic stress disorder.

David Dade, organiser of Islington Poppy Appeal, said: “In Islington we lost 10,000 men and boys who left to go to the First World War and never came home. The Tommy represents them. It will be standing in the middle of the garden at the back of the memorial. It’s poignant to look at.”

The £750 memorial was paid for out of the Mayor of Islington’s budget.
