Hundreds gathered to pay their respects to the war dead on Sunday during Islington’s annual Remembrance Day ceremonies. Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was present at one of the three services which took place in the borough and spoke to the dozens gathered at Manor Gardens. The memorial day marks the end of the First World War in 1918.
“It is right that on this day we reflect on the human costs of war and the sacrifices made by our veterans in conflict and peacekeeping over many years,” said Mr Corbyn.

He added: “In doing so we must commit to providing proper and continuing support to our armed forces, veterans and their families. Their welfare, as with all our people, must be our driving concern.”

A procession made up of members of the armed forces alongside police officers made its way down Upper Street after meeting outside the Town Hall. The Mayor of Islington, Cllr Una O’Halloran, laid a wreath on the permanent memorial in Islington Green where a service took place to mark the minute’s silence at 11 o’clock.
