A grieving mother whose son was stabbed to death in Upper Street earlier this year has finally been given permission to display police appeal posters at the scene of the attack.
Jonathon “JJ” McPhillips, 28, was stabbed outside the town hall in February. No one has been charged over the attack.
His mother, Michelle McPhillips, said she struggled to get permission to display the posters, which went up last week but can only be seen for 14 days.
“I’ve put up 40 to 50 posters. It’s been very difficult for me to get the posters up. When my son was murdered I was told people didn’t want the posters up because it makes them feel uncomfortable,” said Ms McPhillips.
“I first approached the police about the posters but they said it was nothing to do with them. I then approached the Town Hall. They said it was about London Transport. I’ve been going round in a circle.
“But they’ve come through for me and I’m grateful.”
Ms McPhillips has moved out of the borough to start a new life by the sea following her son’s death.
“It’s made me look at people in a totally different way. They [JJ’s attackers] could be walking past me every day,” she said.
