Residents have attacked the Town Hall for selling off valuable park space.

More than 600 people have signed the petition to Islington Council after a planning bid was made to convert a former park-keepers’ hut into a private garden room.

The hut, which backs onto Dalmeny Park in Tufnell Park, was sold for £10,000 by the council to the owners of a five-storey Dalmeny Road property.

“To have the council sell part of it [the park] off without public consultation or knowl­edge is outrageous,” she wrote in the petition.

“If councillors aren’t going to look after the spaces our children need to play in, we have to be vigilant, protest and make some noise.”

The Islington Society has also objected.

Julieta Pesce, who visits the park every day with her young daughter, said: “We are dealing with less and less green spaces. The sense of community is shrinking.”

A Town Hall spokesman said: “The hut had been unused for over 20 years and was in a poor state of repair. The sale of the hut means there is no loss of open space from the park.”
