The Green Party unveiled their candidates for the June 8 general election yesterday (Thursday).

Highbury East councillor and London Assembly member Caroline Russell, 54, will stand in Islington North – where she came third in 2015 – while pro-EU campaigner Benali Hamdache, 28, will con­test Islington South and Finsbury. Both candidates live in Highbury.

The Greens said their “biggest and most ambitious” general election campaign in Islington to date would see the candidates campaign against “the Labour and Conservative parties’ reckless support for extreme Brexit”, in favour of cleaner air, a “fairer and more sustainable” economy and to make housing more affordable.

Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn this week attacked the Conservative govern­ment’s housing record, saying housing is treated as “an investment for the few, not homes for the many”. On a visit to Essex, the Islington North MP criticised the “rigged system” and warned: “Brit­ain faces a housing crisis, with runaway rents and unaffordable housing.”

The Liberal Democrats picked their candidates for the Islington constituen­cies last week. UKIP and the Conservatives will do so next week.
