The Town Hall wants to honour fighters for women’s rights in Islington.
To mark International Women’s Day on March 8, Islington Council is asking the community to share its stories of women who championed equality.
A judging panel, made up of the council’s women’s staff forum, will select up to 10 women, whose photographs and stories will be made into a digital artwork, created by artist Sarah Pimenta, to be unveiled on the day.
Islington was home to early pioneers of gender equality. One of the country’s earliest advocates of women’s rights was Mary Wollstonecraft, who lived in Newington Green and established a school for girls in 1784.
In the early 1900s, there were regular demonstrations outside Holloway Prison, as more than 1,000 suffragettes were sent to jail.
Nominations should be sent to local.history@islington.gov.uk by February 10. They must be for a living person and supported with a sentence explaining why they should be selected.
