Hundreds of people across the borough paid their respects to Islington’s war dead last week.

On Friday, traffic was stopped outside the Town Hall as veterans, dignitaries and members of the public fell silent at 11am.

Mayor Kat Fletcher, council leader Richard Watts and Lt Col Charles Goodson-Wickes watched from the steps as readings from the Rev Jonathan Brewster, from Christ Church in Highbury, and Islington Veterans Association (IVA) padre Nigel Williams gave readings.

Terry Parratt was the flagbearer and Peter McCafferty the pageant master.

On Sunday, hundreds of people lined Highbury Corner, Upper Street and Islington Green for the annual Remembrance parade. IVA chairman Dennis Sharrocks was joined by veterans, cadets, Cllr Fletcher and Islington South and Finsbury MP Emily Thornberry.

Laura Alvarez laid a wreath in the absence of her husband Jeremy Corbyn, who was at the Cenotaph.

Services were also held at Spa Green war memorial in Roseberry Avenue, Clerkenwell and by the War Memorial Arch in Royal Northern Gardens, Holloway.

Islington Council and Islington Veterans’ Association are marking 100 years since the Battle of the Somme on Friday, today (Friday) at Manor Gardens in Holloway. More than 750 men with connections to Islington and Finsbury lost their lives at the Somme.
