A residential street was gridlocked this week as Tufnell Park Road bore the brunt of Transport for London’s closure of Holloway Road.
Traffic was tail-to-tail from Holloway Road to Tufnell Park tube station, parked cars have been damaged and huge HGVs dominated the road.
To make matters worse, Tufnell Park Road itself was closed for a short period on Wednesday after an HGV collided with a van, causing its load to shift. The lorry then hit a bus, smashing its windows. The passengers were already off the bus.
The road closure is needed to replace the 100-year-old Upper Holloway bridge. Work will continue till January.
Chairwoman of Tufnell Park Road Residents’ Association, Kathleen Greaves, said: “It’s been utter chaos.”
Islington Council, who slammed TfL for the “last-minute” announcement, has secured a range of concessions, including a shuttle bus for the elderly and disabled in the “cut off” section, and signs advising motorists of the closure as far away as Birmingham.
Transport chief Claudia Webbe said: “It’s appalling that a residential road has effectively become a motorway.”
The northbound lane of Holloway Road will reopen at 5am on Monday.
A meeting to discuss the closure is being held at St George’s and All Saints church in Crayford Road at 8pm on Wednesday.
