Hundreds of people descended on Angel on Sunday for the annual Canal Festival, which celebrated its 30th anniversary this year. The free event was opened by mayor of Islington Kat Fletcher, who arrived by boat from the London Canal Museum. She gave a welcome speech before starting the bell-boat race – the red team won – in the City Road Basin.
Families took part fun fair activities with rides and bouncy castles, Punch & Judy, and listened to a story-teller. There were also boat trips, a regatta, bell-boat racing, art projects including free pottery sessions, an outdoor art gallery, live music, street theatre and stalls selling everything from canalware, crafts, books, clothes, jewellery, bric-à-brac, hot and cold food and non-alcoholic drinks.
Cllr Fletcher tweeted later: “Great afternoon at Angel Canal Festival. Huge thanks to all the volunteers and sponsors who make it happen.”
