Abstract

A retired midwife died after choking on a piece of meat while having a meal with her family

Basera Kakar, 82, collapsed and went into cardiac arrest at her home in Finsbury Park in March.

Paramedic Robert Wallace was called to her home in Hanley Road, St Pancras Coroner’s Court heard on Friday.

Initially, Ms Kakar, originally from Afghanistan, was not breathing and had no pulse, but Mr Wallace managed to kickstart her breathing with CPR and the use of an airway adjunct.

Mr Wallace did not see the piece of meat when looking into her throat, but assistant coroner Richard Brittain said this did not contribute to Ms Kakar’s death.

A second team of paramedics found the partial blockage and dislodged it.

“I am confident I did the best I could for that person on my own,” Mr Wallace said.

London Ambulance is to carry out its own serious investigation.

Dr Brittain ruled it was an accidental death.
