Money was raised for Alzheimer’s sufferers at an event at a sheltered housing scheme in Clerkenwell on Friday.
The annual Priory House summer fete saw residents and staff sell cakes, quiche, tea and coffee, second-hand clothing and bric-a-brac for Alzheimer’s Research UK.
Sarah Wray, described by residents as the “best ever manager” and “a fantastic woman” by Clerkenwell ward councillor Raphael Andrews, who was at the event, said the charity was chosen after two residents of the scheme died as a result of Alzheimer’s in recent years.
“It’s the first time we are raising money for this cause. We recently had a workshop about Alzheimer’s with residents, and we currently have three residents suffering from the condition,” Ms Wray added.
Also at the party was Raymond Badger, 88, who has lived at Priory House for 20 years and is a well-known face at the nearby St Luke’s community centre in Finsbury.
Mr Badger, a former butcher’s-boy-turned-soldier who later became a professional dancer and qualified dance teacher, suffered two falls recently and told the Tribune he has been unable to twirl since.
“I really miss it,” said the Yorkshireman, who moved to London in 1958.
“I like ballroom dancing, Latin dancing and the foxtrot. I go dancing four times a week.”
