Abstract

Barbecuers at Highbury Fields had to make way for more active pursuits as the park hosted a day of free sports activities on Saturday.

Go Islington saw thousands descend on the Fields to enjoy handball, basketball, climbing, tennis and martial arts.

Billed as a way of finding out more about getting active in Islington, the event featured an urban country show with a food market, duck herding, a BMX stunt show and a top dog competition as well as tai chi and tree-climbing demonstrations.

Baby ballet, salsa and a singalong in the marquee ensured there was something for all the family.

Environment chief Councillor Claudia Webbe said: “I was delighted to see thousands of people, of all ages, filling Highbury Fields in the sunshine, discovering a new favourite sport, enjoying the park and all that our Go Islington festival had to offer.”

The event is the highlight of the council’s Love Islington Parks summer campaign.
