A street exhibition featuring 40 artists working live was the centrepiece of Saturday’s Whitecross Street Party.
Around 5,000 people enjoyed the seventh annual event, including The Rise of the Nonconformists exhibition, which celebrates the radical history of the nearby Bunhill Fields burial ground.
The Stage of Nonconformity showed work from young people at St Luke’s Primary School, interpreting the history of the cemetery, the resting place of William Blake, John Bunyan and Daniel Defoe, and there was a puppet show by Little Angel Theatre in Fortune Street Park.
Elsewhere there was live music, dance and parades featuring Candoco Dance Company and the young people from Angel Shed Theatre, Dimensions Carnival Group, Sadler’s Wells, Key Changes and Spectrum youth centre.
Keren Wiltshire, director of services at St Luke’s Community Centre, said: “It’s inspiring to bring this wonderful, unique event together, attracting such a diverse community and audiences of all ages.”
The event is produced and curated by St Luke’s, working with artist Teddy Baden and with the support of Islington Council.
The work from The Rise of the Nonconformist will be on show on the Whitecross buildings until September 17.
