Abstract

A barrister was elected as Labour councillor for Barnsbury ward in a by-election last Thursday.

Rowena Champion, 50, from Barnsbury, cruised to victory with 2,316 votes on a turnout of 25 per cent.

She had continued to campaign despite breaking her ankle while leafleting on a Barnsbury housing estate.

Ms Champion said she was “extremely proud” to have been elected to serve the people of Barnsbury, which she has called home for more than 20 years.

Liberal Democrat candidate Bradley Hillier-Smith came second with 409 votes while Tory Edward Waldegrave polled 367 votes, Ernestas Jegorovas, for the Greens, 302 votes and Robert Capper, an independent, 40 votes.

The by-election was triggered by James Murray’s appointment as Mayor of London Sadiq Khan’s housing advisor.
