Arsenal pie shop Piebury Corner has been targeted by raiders who swiped cash and flooded the building, causing thousands of pounds worth of damage.
Owners Paul and Nicky Campbell were on holiday in Devon when they heard their shop, which sells pies named after Gunners’ legends, had been broken into.
Raiders got in through a back entrance before cutting a 12-inch hole to access the kitchen. They took the day’s takings, a safe, the tips jar and a box for Islington homelessness charity The Pilion Trust.
The theft has been likened to the £14m Hatton Garden jewellery raid in which raiders drilled a hole through 50cm thick vault walls.
Mr Campbell said thieves blocked sinks and left taps running, causing part of the ceiling to cave in and flooding the shop. The hard drive for the CCTV cameras was taken.
Staff turned up for work on Friday to find water running out from under the front door.
“The staff were in shock,” Mr Campbell said. “It’s just so mindless. It’s clearly some young kids that have done this.”
Staff were working round the clock to ensure the shop was open as usual yesterday (Thursday). “It’s business as usual,” Mr Campbell said. “But it still massively affects us as a small business.”
Mr Campbell, who set up the Holloway Road shop in 2013, estimated the damaged at up to £6,000.
Bizarrely, laptops and iPads in the office were not taken. Mr Campbell said he did not think any pies were eaten, but some stock was damaged as the condenser to the cool room was damaged.
The shop is showing all Euro 2016 matches when it is open, Wednesday to Sunday.
