A talking newspaper for visually impaired people has celebrated recording 100 editions.
Talking News Islington is now delivered on tapes and CDs to 170 listeners, having grown from just 19 when it started in 2007.
It is recorded by an army of 32 volunteers but its driving force is 88-year-old Elizabeth Jones from Archway, though she tries not to take credit.
“Without the volunteers we wouldn’t be able to do it,” said Ms Jones. “All credit goes to them.”
Ms Jones, who lost her sight after an accident in 1980, started Talking News because she kept receiving council newsletters in her mailbox that she couldn’t read.
Last year Ms Jones, who won a British Empire Medal in 2014, attended 154 meetings in the borough to keep her listeners informed.
“It’s accessible information about what’s going on in Islington,” she said.
“It’s important because you’re living in a borough and don’t know what’s happening, but everyone else does.”
Each month 35 to 40 tracks, including articles from the Tribune and stories written by listeners, are recorded onto tapes and CDs.
A party to celebrate the milestone was held at the Lorraine Centre in Holloway Road last Wednesday.
Mayor of Islington Kat Fletcher, who was at the event, thanked Ms Jones and the volunteers for all of their hard work.
