Abstract

Two leading trade union activists at London Metropolitan University have been told they will be made redundant.

University College Union (UCU) branch chairman Mark Campbell and branch secretary David Hardman have denounced the move as “an attempt to victimise active trade unionists and intimidate other staff”.

A petition against “job cuts and trade union victimisation at London Met” was launched this week. It has already been signed by more than 1,000 people. Mr Hardman said: “We have a duty to fight to defend our members and the interests of our students and will continue to do so with vigour and as loudly as we possibly can.”

Several other union colleagues who have spoken out against job cuts have been issued with redundancy notices.

Earlier this year London Met sold off its landmark Cass Arts campus in Whitechapel for £50m. Students will be moved to the main campus in Holloway Road.
