Abstract

Islington Council’s trading standards team is checking letting agencies meet new legal requirements – and has warned those who do not follow the law may face fines.
Under new legislation letting agencies must be a member of a redress scheme, so tenants can turn to an independent body if there is a dispute with an agent. Agencies must also clearly display the fees they charge to landlords and tenants, and explain what they are for.

The Town Hall will be writing to lettings agents advising them of the legal requirements and warning that compliance checks will begin later this month.
