A HOMELESS shelter was given a fresh lick of paint free of charge thanks to the initiative of an Islington construction manager and his colleagues.
Shelter From The Storm, off Caledonian Road, had the front of its building repainted, toilets and showers decorated and its central heating system repaired and serviced.
Sham McBride, senior site manager at Rydon, a construction firm active in the borough, offered to do the work for the charity, which provides a safe place to sleep for up to 44 guests but also offers assistance with housing, employment and healthcare.
The shelter – founded in 2007 by lifelong friends Sheila Scott and Louie Salvoni – relies entirely on fundraising events, donations and the hard work of more than 200 volunteers.
Ms Scott said: “At Shelter from the Storm we feel that homeless people are very much part of the community in Islington. We were delighted when Sham contacted us and asked if there was anything Rydon could do to help a less fortunate sector of the community.
“This not only represents a considerable cash saving for us but a lovely feeling of partnership with our neighbours.”
