The Town Hall has rejected a request by popular former nightclub Peoples Social Club to reopen as a coffee and cocktail bar.
The club in Holloway Road was forced to close in May last year after a judge backed Islington Council’s decision to revoke its licence after complaints about noise and anti-social behaviour – described as a “nightmare” by residents.
The same management wanted to reopen as a coffee shop that would serve alcohol until midnight on Fridays and Saturdays.
Numerous residents and Furlong Road Residents’ Association, objected.
The residents’ association has said: “The description of this as a ‘coffee shop’ masks the fact that this is in fact merely a replacement for the previous operation and will to all intents and purposes simply be another all-day drinking venue with the very real possibility of the basement being hired out again to club promoters and DJs.
