A man has appeared in court charged with a murder committed in Canonbury nearly 19 years ago.
Foyjur Rahman, 44, appeared in custody at Uxbridge Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday charged with the 1997 murder of Abdul Samad.
Rahman was charged after being extradited from the United States on the same day.
He was arrested by officers from the Met’s Homicide and Major Crime Command on his arrival at Heathrow Airport and subsequently charged.
Mr Samad – who was known as Kemal – was attacked in Alwyne Villas in May 1997.
At the time of his death the 25-year-old, who lived off Pentonville Road, ran his own business, Curry in a Hurry, based in St Paul’s Road, near the home he shared with family.
In 2012 Moheuddin Bablu, 41, was jailed for life and an Old Bailey judge recommended that he serve the minimum 18 years following his conviction for Mr Samad’s murder.
Bablu fled the scene but left tell-tale DNA behind on a scarf he used as a mask. He was identified as a prime suspect in 1997 but had fled to Bangladesh and was not located until 1999.
Although extradition proceedings began then, the Bangladeshi authorities ruled that he must complete a prison sentence there first. He was finally returned to London to face justice in 2011 and was charged with Mr Samad’s murder.
