Abstract

A long-running saga over extensions to Highbury Pool came to an end last week when council chiefs approved revised plans.

Proposals for two extensions to the building in Highbury Crescent were considered by an Islington Council planning committee last Tuesday.

A first-floor extension on the Highbury Place side will provide two new studios, with a single-storey extension to the front of the building providing a new entrance and reception area.

Town Hall architects had been asked to come up with a new design for an extension to the pool after original plans were rejected following pressure from residents.

Martin Jones, chairman of Highbury Fields Association, said: “The consultation process has been a remarkable exercise in constructive dialogue between the planning authority, the applicant, the community and councillors. The residents’ group is really enthused by the new design concept of a pavilion in the park.”
