Abstract

Arlington Square residents are proudly waving a Green Flag after the park in Angel that has been transformed by neighbours won national recognition.

Arlington Square is among a record-breaking 1,582 parks and green spaces which this week received a prestigious Green Flag Award by charity Keep Britain Tidy. To win the honour, parks must be welcoming, safe, clean, tidy and well-marketed.

Friends and neighbours in the Arlington conservation area have transformed the council-owned square with regular Saturday gardening sessions. In four years they have raised cash to plant more than 40,000 bulbs, shrubs, plants and trees.

Gordon McArthur, chairman of the Arlington Association, said: “It is rewarding to know that all the hard work of the Arlington Association’s volunteers has been recognised. It shows what a community can achieve when neighbours come together to improve their neighbourhood.”

The Mary Tealby Peace Garden, in Holloway’s Paradise Park, won a Green Flag Community Award. It is the fourth time the garden has been recognised.

Freightliners Farm, in Holloway, and King Henry’s Walk Gardens, in Mildmay, also received Green Flag Community Awards this year.
