Abstract

The Chief Inspector of Prisons has published a damning report into conditions at Pentonville Prison in which he raises questions over the future of the Caledonian Road jail. The report, published by the prisons’ inspectorate this week, paints a shocking picture of “filthy” conditions, a huge rise in violent incidents leading to inmates feeling unsafe, drugs being freely available and a chronic lack of staff. The Victorian prison holds 1,264 adult men from the north and east London area – 355 more prisoners than it is designed for.
