- TitleGPs in crisis? My surgery has been tops for 40 years

I often read disturbing and distressing news about local GP surgeries and the alarming threats facing our NHS. Your front-page headline, with “shambles” in inch-high letters, followed by a feature in which there’s a quote from someone describing a local GP service as an “utter shambles” is a classic example (‘Shambles’ as patients face hunt for GP, May 22).
Bad news always seems to take precedence over good, so I hope that my experience of one of Islington’s GP surgeries will do something to redress the balance.
I’m 81 and I’ve been a patient of The Amwell Group Practice during the 40 years I’ve lived in Islington. I must have seen the doctors there at least a couple of hundred times during that time. Each time I’ve always had the very best attention. It’s a welcoming and pleasant surgery with kind and efficient receptionists. I’ve never had to wait long for an appointment.
The doctors and the nurses have always listened thoroughly to my various concerns. They’ve always taken my problems seriously and never failed to give me the highest quality of healthcare. At my age all sorts of minor and sometimes major things crop up with my health, although I realise that for the most part my health, like anyone else’s, is largely in my own hands.Whenever I’ve faced worries or problems with my health, the folks at this local NHS practice have always helped me. They provide their patients with a quality of healthcare that I can’t imagine could possibly be better. Surely that’s news that’s not too good to print.
