MP Emily Thornberry will warn the House of Commons that GP services in Islington are “heading for crisis” following news that a third surgery will close.Ms Thornberry will tell health secretary Jeremy Hunt at Question Time on Tuesday that GP resignations, along with increased workloads, are causing a burden on other practices and forcing patients to seek treatment at A&E departments. She spoke out after it was announced that Holloway Medical Centre, in Holloway Road, close to the Emirates Stadium, is expected to shut its doors for the last time after 40 years on July 24. Patients who still have not been told officially about the closure will have less than two months to find a new GP.Bingfield Street surgery, in Barnsbury, closes today (Friday) and Mitchison Road, in Canonbury, is due to shut at the end of July.
The Islington South and Finsbury Labour MP will ask Mr Hunt about the state of GP services in the borough. She said: “A large number of my constituents have contacted me to share their concerns about this issue. By changing the funding formula in a way that has disadvantaged practices in deprived, inner London areas, the Tory government has helped create the mess Islington’s GP surgeries are in.”
