A “BRAVE AND HEROIC” resident on the troubled Andover estate in Finsbury Park was injured in a shooting on Wednesday night as he tried to break up a fight.Father-of-five Gary Miller intervened in a confrontation between different groups of teenagers he witnessed unfolding outside his house. The 53-year-old was shot in the buttocks when he tried calm the situation and it has even been claimed he jumped in front of the gunman to shield the intended victim.Police raced to the scene just before midnight following reports of running battles between groups of teenagers. Two shots were reportedly fired at the estate’s community centre, which is located in the middle of the estate. Hundreds of frightened guests were detained, searched and questioned inside the centre as police tried to identify the culprits. Officers did not leave the scene until 4am.Islington Council’s community safety chief Paul Convery said: “I understand that Mr Miller may have been shielding the intended victim of the gunman, which was a pretty brave act. All he wanted to do was to stop the violence, which was very heroic.”People had gathered at the community centre for a funeral wake to celebrate the life of a local man, when the violence involving different groups of teenagers began outside.Mr Miller, a respected member of the Andover Future Forum and a youth worker with Kensington and Chelsea Council who previously worked for Islington, was recovering in hospital yesterday (Thursday). His mother, 82-year-old Katie McFarlane, who he lives with on the estate, described her youngest son as “quiet and fun”.
