Abstract
Thomas Britton (1644-1714) known as the musical coalman, held weekly musical concerts for 36 years in the loft above his repository beside the Old Jerusalem Tavern in Jerusalem Passage (corner of Clerkenwell Green and Aylesbury Street) where there is a plaque. Thomas d'Urfey (1653-1723) was a composer of bawdy ballads including 'There was a lass of Islington'. Henry Carey (1687-1743) poet & songwriter buried in St James Clerkenwell in an unmarked grave after hanging himself on the death of his son.
