Abstract
Sir George Bartley (1842-1910) born in Hackney, worked for 20 years at the Science and Art Department, rising to Assistiant Director and marrying superintendent Henry Cole's daughter Mary Charlotte. Justice of the Peace, Conservative Member of Parliament for Islington North 1885-1906. Interested in poverty, social issues and self-reliance, founded the National Penny Bank. He was knighted in 1902 for public service.
