Abstract
,Anna Letitia Aikin (1743-1825) successful enlightenment poet and opponent of slavery, whose career ended when she criticized Britain's participation in the Napoleonic Wars. Married the Hugeunot Rev Rochemont Barbauld and ran a school with him in Suffolk. After years of marriage he tried to kill her at their house in Stoke Newington where he was Unitarian minister, but she refused to leave him. He drowned himself in the New River. She is buried in the family vault at St Mary's, Stoke Newington and there is a monument to her there.
