Abstract

Sir Francis Bacon, Viscount St Albans (1561-1626) lawyer, philosopher, writer and scientist. Lord Chancellor in 1618 but he was impeached for bribery in 1621, ending his political career. In 1616, he leased Canonbury Tower from the Earl of Northampton and a mulberry tree is said to have been planted during his time. He may have held meetings of the 'Invisible Society' there, the precursor to the Royal Society. He is shown in robes by a table with the purse of the Chancellor's Great Seal and a hat.
