Abstract

The Lord and Lady Mayoress of London at St Mark's Church Clerkenwell with Rev Frederick John Dove, Vicar 1932-65,Town Clerk J.E.Arnold James and Dr Chuni Lai Katial (1898-1978), Mayor of Finsbury 1938-39, first South Asian UK mayor. Trained in the Punjab, he ran his first UK practice in Canning Town and introduced Mahatma Gandhi to Charlie Chaplin at his house there. In 1935 lived at 4 Spencer Street, Clerkenwell. Labour Councillor of St John's Ward 1934-38, Alderman 1938-46 and London County Council member 1946, Justice of the Peace. Given the Freedom of Finsbury in 1948 and returned to India. A physician and surgeon, he was chair of the council's Public Health Committee and pushed forward the Finsbury Plan for health and housing including commissioning Berthold Lubetkin to build Finsbury Health Centre. During the Blitz was the first Air Medical Officer working at a city First Aid post.
