Abstract

Sir Andrew Torrance (1845-1909) was born in Glasgow, came to London in 1918 working in muslin manufacturing, lived at 16 Highbury Quadrant. Justice of the Peace, served on London County Council which he later chaired. As mayor of Islington 1903-55. he persuaded Andrew Carnegie to give £40,000 to build libraries. He was knighted in 1906 and was elected Liberal MP for Glasgow.
