Abstract
Sir George Elliott (1847-1925) was 13 times mayor of Islington: 1902-3, 1906-9, 1910–19. Born and educated in South Islington, confectioner in Upper Street. Justice of the Peace, elected to Islington Vestry in 1875 and served on the Board of Guardians, Metropolitan Asylums, Metropolitan Water Board, London County Council and later Conservative Member of Parliament for Islington West. As mayor during the First World War largely responsible for raising 21st (Service) Battalion (Islington), The Middlesex Regiment. He was knighted in 1917 for public service.
