- NotesJames Herbert Paul Neal was a member of the Islington Art Circle. Born in Islington, he was accepted at 14 by St Martin's School of Art, later studying at the Royal College of Art. After serving in the war he returned to Islington, with homes in Pleasant Place (adjacent to Astey’s Row) and St Paul’s Road. From 1958 he lectured at Hull College of Art.
Abstract
Rundown at this time, the row named after its builder John Astey dates back to the late18th Century when it was developed alongside the New River and later landscaped into an ornamental garden, now a section of New River Walk.
